  18. <p>     Students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are
  19. getting more attention than they expected. The school has hired
  20. a team of consultants who are scheduled to drop in on art
  21. classes and "assess student profiles," which the students
  22. suspect really means taking note of potentially offensive works
  23. in progress. School officials may not want to be burned again
  24. by their students' knack for controversy. In 1988 an exhibition
  25. featuring a portrayal of the late Mayor Harold Washington in
  26. women's underwear prompted enraged aldermen to take the
  27. painting off the wall in protest. A year later, veterans' groups
  28. went ballistic over a student's placing of an American flag
  29. on the floor, which encouraged visitors to traipse across it
  30. as part of the artistic experience. While officials staunchly
  31. defended the right to free expression at the time, the
  32. institute would be happy to avoid a new episode and a possible
  33. drop in public contributions.
